Guidelines For Musical Instruments on Buses

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation mandates in 67 Pa Code 171.58, that the interior of a school bus must be free of objects which can cause injury. Objects must be secured, and the aisles and emergency exits open and free of blockage. The following must be adhered to at all times: 1. Large band instruments or school project items are not permitted on the bus unless they can be held on the student’s lap. 2. Items may not be placed under seats, they can become projectiles upon impact. 3. Nothing can be placed in the driver’s compartment/doorway or aisle. 


Below is a list of band instruments developed by the schools Music Dept's in conjunction with Transportation that are allowed and not allowed to be transported on the bus.

Mini Baritones (Elem. only)

Any instrument that can fit into a standard child's backpack and not stick out.


Cello
Bass
Bass Clarinet
Baritone
Euphoniums
Tuba
Any type of guitar.
French Horn
Baritone Saxophone
Any drum with a head larger than 8" in diameter.




Any instrument the student cannot hold securely on his/her lap.
